INFORMATION | Budgeting and the barriers of poverty; The Care Leavers Experience

Growing up in "The System", its a statistical fact that children in care will not be provided with the crucial life skills many other children may be taught by their parents either intentionally or passively. These skills can range from budget, personal care to social interactions. Recently, and from the back of the Independent Care Review, Vicky Ford, the minister for Children felt it an appropriate suggestion that Care Leavers struggle to budget money and face issues with debt due to a lack of understanding how to maintain a tenancy, pay bills and budget effectively. The comments raise the important issue of how financially vulnerable many care leavers are, but what is missing is the acknowledgment that it is not possible for people, especially those who are vulnerable, to simply budget themselves out of poverty. It is expected, across all local authorities that care leavers are financially independent much younger that their peers. But yet, care leavers are expected to li...

ACADEMIC | How music transformed 1980s hair and makeup fashions

The 1980s was an era in which diversity and uniqueness were pushed to the forefront of mainstream media. A deciphering reason for this can be unambiguously linked to the plenitude of creative, ambitious and era defining music of the 1980s alongside with the abundant subcultures that presented during the era. With the introduction of MTV and henceforth the birth of the music video, hair and makeup played a vital part in allowing the public to be inspired. The 1980s saw the bridging together of the constricted 1970s to the liberal nature of the 1990s and never has an era been more fundamental for change and afire with political controversy. Through a thorough investigation of hair and makeup styles that developed throughout the 1980s and examining the political, external, sociological and technological influences during this period it is possible to develop a clear and precise understanding of the extrinsic forces that influenced hair and makeup fashions of the 1980s. During the 1980s, c...

ACADEMIC | Modernising The Great Gatsby- How Luhrmann Translated the American Classic

Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby” has been hailed by Curnutt (2007) as being the quintessential American novel. Sales were originally poor and there was little talk regarding turning the novel into a movie until the 1926 adaptation which was pulled and all that remains is a trailer according to Dixon (2003). Perdikaki (2018) also details the fact that The Great Gatsby has a total of 4 film adaptations, the most recent of which Baz Luhrmanns 2013 attempt starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The 2013 adaptation according to Pridikaki (2018) is exciting and entertaining, but critics such as Nabi (2016) argue that Luhrmann prioritised modernism over realism. When critically comparing the written text to the film it is important to explore the range of techniques used within the film to interpret the written text. Furthermore, The Great Gatsby is rife with themes that were unique to the time period in which it was set, and these have differing levels of portrayal in the 2013 film adaptatio...

INFORMATION | A Guide to British Politics

Who regulates power? Following on from the Glorious Revolution the monarch has a lesser role in government. The Prime Minister ultimately controls the government. If the government does something unconstitutional the courts have no power except to advise the government to change their actions. In the U.K parliament sovereignty is in place. This means that the legislative body (parliament) has supreme power and has more power than the executive and judicial branches laid out in the constitution. The UK parliament operates under a bicameral system meaning there are two houses of parliament. These two houses are the commons and the lords. The House of Commons are tasked with approving new laws as well as reviewing taxes. They are also responsible for holding the government to account although this usually falls into the list of The Opposition responsibilities. The Commons will also debate the day's issues. The role of the Lords differs in that they can challenge work undertaken by th...

OPINION | Poverty and Class Tourism

When did posing in front of derelict sites become an aesthetic? Or dressing in a certain way so that you can appear humble? These acts do nothing but to signal to those living on or below the poverty line that many people in the UK lack basic self awareness and are dripping in privilege. Poverty is not an experience or a spectacle. Run down estates, neglected by their respective councils are not a fashion and not having enough money to eat a balanced diet each week is not a trend.  Definitions of poverty have developed over time and the findings of social scientists such as Booth indicated that there was a strong link between poverty and ill health and that the poor were not to be blamed for their situations. Booth's findings reflect his own interpretation of poverty and his descriptions of poor people being vicious, semi criminal delinquents is representative of the period and bias within society in which the research was carried out however this stereotype has lived on and ...
